A journey to Papua

A journey to Papua

As part of the Indonesian curriculum, AIS students learned about the Kamoro tribe of Papua. The Kamoro tribe are a seminomadic tribe living along the southern Mimika region of Papua. One of the sources of income of the Kamoro people is through the creation of great Kamoro sculptures.

However with carvers and plaiters living in villages where accessibility is difficult and costly, there is a need to introduce and open up markets to their products, so that their tradition remain sustainable and the Komoro people gain optimum economic benefits. Students began to appreciate how geography, vegetation, fauna and beliefs influence language and culture, as well as discussed the possibilities in a changing economy.
